According to the latest report from the<em> Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK)<\/em>, the country had <em><strong data-start=\"401\" data-end=\"452\">45.36 million active mobile money subscriptions<\/strong><\/em> as of July 2025 \u2014 a <em>7.2% increase<\/em> compared to the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"533\" data-end=\"822\">In a nation with an estimated population of about 55 million, these numbers show that mobile money is no longer a novelty; it\u2019s a near-universal utility. From the bustling streets of Nairobi to rural trading centers, mobile wallets have woven themselves into the fabric of everyday life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"533\" data-end=\"822\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif; color: initial;\">Agent Network Keeps Growing<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"867\" data-end=\"1151\">The number of agents \u2014 the people behind those familiar green, red, or blue kiosks \u2014 has also climbed, reaching <em><strong data-start=\"979\" data-end=\"1001\">416,994 nationwide<\/strong>.<\/em> That\u2019s a <em>5.5% jump<\/em> year-on-year, a sign of just how critical these service points remain for deposits, withdrawals, and everyday transactions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1153\" data-end=\"1321\">Even as Kenya becomes more digital, agents remain the bridge between cash and the mobile economy, especially for people in rural areas or those still earning in cash.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>M-Pesa Still the Giant, But Competition Is Heating Up<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1392\" data-end=\"1685\"><strong data-start=\"1392\" data-end=\"1414\">Safaricom\u2019s <\/strong><em>M-Pesa<\/em> remains the dominant force, controlling <em>over 90% of the market.<\/em> Its success lies in an unmatched agent network, reliable transaction systems, and strong brand trust built over more than 15 years. For many Kenyans, \u201cM-Pesa\u201d is almost synonymous with \u201cmobile money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"1725\">But it\u2019s no longer a one-horse race.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1726\" data-end=\"2422\">\n<li data-start=\"1726\" data-end=\"1858\">\n<p data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1858\"><strong data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1744\">Airtel Money<\/strong> has been winning over customers by <em>waiving transfer fees<\/em> and steadily improving its platform\u2019s reliability.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1859\" data-end=\"2061\">\n<p data-start=\"1861\" data-end=\"2061\"><strong data-start=\"1861\" data-end=\"1872\">Equitel<\/strong>, backed by Equity Bank, offers a unique <em>telecom-plus-banking hybrid<\/em> service that appeals to small business owners who want one integrated account for calls, data, and money services.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2062\" data-end=\"2186\">\n<p data-start=\"2064\" data-end=\"2186\"><strong data-start=\"2064\" data-end=\"2072\">Tala<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2077\" data-end=\"2087\">Branch<\/strong> have carved out a niche by offering <em>instant, collateral-free microloans <\/em>via smartphone apps.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2187\" data-end=\"2422\">\n<p data-start=\"2189\" data-end=\"2422\">Cross-border platforms like <strong data-start=\"2217\" data-end=\"2233\">Chipper Cash<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2238\" data-end=\"2250\">PesaLink<\/strong> are gaining popularity for <em>low-cost, instant transfers <\/em>across East Africa \u2014 a big win for traders, freelancers, and families with relatives in neighboring countries.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The increased competition is forcing all providers to innovate faster, lower costs, and improve service.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif; color: initial;\">Regulators Step In to Protect Consumers<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2587\" data-end=\"2711\">With growth comes oversight. The <strong data-start=\"2620\" data-end=\"2651\">Central Bank of Kenya (CBK)<\/strong> has been proactive in setting new limits and protections:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"2946\">\n<li data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"2783\">\n<p data-start=\"2714\" data-end=\"2783\"><strong data-start=\"2714\" data-end=\"2737\">Mobile wallet limit<\/strong> raised from <em>KES 300,000 to KES 500,000.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2784\" data-end=\"2946\">\n<p data-start=\"2786\" data-end=\"2946\"><strong data-start=\"2786\" data-end=\"2811\">Daily transaction cap<\/strong> increased to <em>KES 250,000,<\/em> making it easier for businesses and individuals to make larger payments without multiple transactions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2948\" data-end=\"3235\">CBK has also doubled down on <em>interoperability<\/em> \u2014 ensuring that a customer on one platform can send money to another without facing punitive charges.
